Duodenum

Position of the duodenum cavity and spaces- the doudenum is found in the abdominal cavity within both the peritoneal space and retroperitoneal space rightward and leftward positioning- its proximal portion lies rightward of the midline in the transpyloric plane while the transverse (3rd) portion crosses the midline distally it is left of midline and achieves its most cranial position at the ligament of Treitz anteroposterior positioning- as a relatively posterior structure it lies in contact with the vertebral column aorta and ivc long axis- is mostly horizontal

relations of the duodenum overall the most important and relevant relations of the duodenum are to the pancreas stomach bile duct superior mesenteric vessels spine 1st part relations anteriorly quadrate lobe of liver and the gallbladder 1st part posteriorly lesser sac gastroduodenal artery bile duct portal vein and inferior vena cava 1st part superiorly entrance to the lesser sac 1st part inferiorly the head of the pancreas 2nd part anteriorly fundus of the gallbladder right lobe of the liver transverse colon coils of the small intestine 2nd part posteriorly hilus of the right kidney right ureter 2nd part laterally right colic flexure ascending colon 2nd part medially head of the pancreas common bile duct with perforation by bile duct and pancreatic duct 3rd part anteriorly superior mesenteric vessels coils of the jejunum 3rd part posteriorly right ureter right psoas muscle inferior vena cava and the aorta 3rd part superiorly head of the pancreas 3rd part inferiorly coils of the jejunum 4th part anteriorly upper part of the root of the mesentery transverse colon and the mesocolon 4th part posteriorly left margin of aorta medial border of the left psoas muscle left renal and testicular vessels and the inferior mesenteric vein 4th part laterally left kidney and left ureter
